Artist Statement: Sandra Rouse began her arts journey through poetry, short story writing and fiction editing. Over the last decade she has focussed on the visual image through woodblock printmaking. She recently completed a mentorship program at Zea Mays Printmaking Studio under the guidance of Julie Lapping Rivera.
Working with wood cut she explores layers of color and form to experience mystery across time with historical forms. Medieval stone carvings in Ireland have stimulated her prints of Sheela-na-gig.. A series of 13 prints are meant to explore interior connections of feeling with ancient expressions of the sacred female form.
Finding a community of local printmakers is exciting and one that she hopes to contribute to.
