Bio: Polly M. Law is a bricoleur, mythologenist, and printmaker living and working in the Rondout Valley of New York State. Her work techniques run from paste-paint cut-paper collages; to monoprints, lino-cut, and silkscreen prints, all working within a range of matrices and themes, reiterating, and amplifying them in conversation. Her themes include narrative, myth, nature, and sometimes, a powerful eye. Influences include: Alice & Martin Provensen; Eyvind Earle; Edward Bawden; Clive Hicks-Jenkins; Mark Hearld.
Artist Statement: My work mines a deep interest in myth, symbolism, narrative, and nature. I am currently exploring raucousness- extremely playful surfaces elbowing abstraction in the ribs. I hold the demands of craft and art in equal regard, taking joy from both as they work together in my pieces.
My work has been influenced by the luscious patterns, textures and graphic forms of Eyvind Earle, and Alice & Martin Provensen; as well as British artists Edward Bawden, Mark Hearld, and Clive Hicks-Jenkins. I also never met a split-fountain I didn’t like. I have an abiding interest in semiotics, the symbolism inherent in everyday objects; and an abiding and futile anxiety about entropy.
