Bio: Misael Hernandez is a photographer from Springfield, Oregon. His work utilizes archived and documentary approaches in photography to decipher the culture, religion, and personal identity of people and the terrain they inhabit. If photography is the universe’s way of recording itself as light fossils, then he considers how it can exist as the vantage point in photography that has a say in his archive of life. His character is seated in his Mexican heritage and Northwestern American upbringing. These two cultures have had tremendous impacts on his character, and they continue to shape the structures of his projects.

Misael is also a photobook designer and a crafter of decorative archival boxes. His techniques utilize modern binding methods and experimental approaches to various delicate Asian papers to create and design limited-edition books and zines to showcase projects. He values the tangible, archival, and personal qualities of the photobook. Each one is an extension of the project inside. The photobook allows him to use the necessary design and material to ensure each book is
crafted with the project in mind first rather than the book. These qualities are vital in expressing his work in narrative form outside an exhibition space.
