Bio: Adam Tinkle is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, and teacher residing in Troy NY. Committed above all to artistic community and collectivity, he once led an experimental children’s orchestra, has helped form numerous artist-run spaces, series and cooperatives, and, as a faculty member at Skidmore College, launched the Co-creation Initiative to forge networks of support between the school and justice-centering community efforts in the wider region. He has authored and collaborated on films, podcasts, artist books, and stage performances, but he currently is focused on music-making, video art, and parenting.

His “visual music” practice, which reimagines expressive uses for antique TV equipment, was featured in a 2022 solo exhibition at the Arts Center of the Capital Region, and in a monumental chiming video-clockface that was displayed above the festival HQ during the inaugural Troy Glow festival. His interactive video baths were recently presented at Club SPA Spa and the Flaherty Film Seminar. His active musical projects include Sun Dogs (sci-fi spa-jazz), Seven Count (human-feel improv in thick electro-acoustic soundscapes), and Adam Tinkle and his Long-Awaited Wrinkle (troubadouresque songs backed by a nimble jazz-roots combo), all of which can be heard on all streaming platforms.

Artist Statement: “A Mess of Things” began, in 2011, as a solo theatre performance that intertwined songs with documentary sounds of my grandfather, Ben Seltzman, an inventor, eccentric, and hoarder who has been an enduring inspiration to me. Working with my student, Atlan Arceo-Witzl (www.atlanaw.com), a brilliant printmaker, I adapted the full text of that performance to fit it inside the covers of a book, which combines digital and analog collage of material from Ben’s unruly archive, with pages hand-stamped by my grandfather’s gears, junk, and braille typewriter, creating a tactile impression of his life and times.
