Bio: Dustin Loveland (he/they) is a non-binary visual artist and dressmaker whose work explores queer ancestry, slow craft, and the intersection of handicrafts and digital technology. Their practice spans various media, including print, drawing, sculpture, hand and machine sewing, and digital drafting and imaging. In their latest fashion collection, Wall Yeller, they draw on incense-making and gratitude as pathways for processing anger.

Loveland earned a BFA in Printmaking and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2014. Since then, they have worked across the 3D scanning, architecture, art, and sewing industries. Their work has been featured in fashion events, including Kansas City Fashion Week Spring/Summer ‘23 and Local Fashion Link 2019, with recent work in Miss/They Camaraderie 2024 at Charlotte Street Gallery (MO). They are currently an artist resident at the Collar Works x Chashama 50 4th Street Studio Residency in Troy, NY. Currently, Loveland’s work pursues craft as art, creativity without jargon, and queer slow fashion.

Artist Statement: With a background in both traditional 2D printmaking and modern 3D printing, I bring a printmaker’s sensitivity to fashion and textiles. By blending haute couture techniques–such as hand sewing, weaving, and felting–with digital processes like vectorizing sewing patterns, screen printing, and shaded weaving, my work explores the relationship between handicrafts and digital technology. I aim to slow down and disrupt the pressures of fast fashion and the algorithms that shape not only what culture we consume but also the culture that gets produced.

For me, fashion is more than fabric stitched together; it’s a constant dialogue with other people in society before, during, and after its production and consumption. This philosophy guides my practice, whether I’m sewing clothes, hand-quilting, or printing on paper. At the heart of my practice, my work sees fashion, textiles, and fibers as tools for placemaking, creating a shift away from a globalized aesthetic to one that celebrates the unique and the local.
